Total Reroll: Episode 21 – Ravoprax’s Marvellous Zoo

Welcome back to Total Reroll, our Dungeons and Dragons podcast! Adam has been playing some some good old fashioned D&D with some friends in London, except it isn’t old fashioned because it’s 5th edition. Our DM Ian has been running us through the ‘Hoard of the Dragon Queen’ storyline, and we picked up a few sessions in with our first episode (we decided to record a bit late, but you can check out some of the previous sessions in Adam’s write ups that start here).

After a forming a tenuous truce with Talis the White, the gang jumps on some wyverns and heads up towards Skyreach to catch up with Rezmir and the dragon cult. Will their new penchant for tactics help to see them through, as we head into the last three episodes of Hoard of the Dragon Queen? Let’s find out!

Total Reroll: Episode 16 – Almost as Black as Velvet

Welcome back to Total Reroll, our Dungeons and Dragons podcast! Adam has been playing some some good old fashioned D&D with some friends in London, except it isn’t old fashioned because it’s 5th edition. This week we have slight detour from the main plot for various reasons, and so we were given new characters on the night for a two part side story involving a consortium of members of various groups tasked with tracking down a powerful magical item stolen by a necromancer to use in dragon cult-related misdeeds. I apologise in advance for the various voices we used!

D&D Tales – Dragon Hatchery (Part Two)

Adam continues his descent into roleplaying games in a new D&D campaign.

Last time we left the group down in the Dragon Hatchery caves, about to enter the now almost empty barracks, as the majority of the dragon cult had packed up and moved along. In the room was a lone cultist wearing ostentatious purple armour and an ornate dagger and scabbard with a dragon design, drinking heavy at the table. Ravoprax the dragonborn druid, Carnicula the elven sorcerer and Red the human barbarian all stumbled in, pretending to be drunk, while Artin the dwarven fighter and Eldo the forest gnome cleric waited at the door.

Responding as if we were friends (we were still wearing out pilfered cultist robes), he told us that the rest of the cult had headed north to Neverwinter, and that there was actually much more to the ritual of raising the dragon queen Tiamat than just amassing gold. He indicated that Frulum, his boss, was in the next room through a wooden door. Carnicula then offered up a drink to the man, a shot of the dragon’s blood from Eldo’s bottomless flask that had already permanently altered Carnicula’s body (leaving him bald and 10 inches taller the previous day). He poured out shots for all four at the table – Red faked drinking her shot, Ravoprax gained the temporary ability to teleport, Carnicula was surrounded by an aura of floating butterflies, and the cultist gained the ability to shoot lightning out of his hands, causing massive damage (something like 4d10) to whomever he targeted. We egged him on to attack the wall (instead of us), but he decided to aim straight at the door. Vaporising the wood, the bolt crackled into the darkness of the next room. There was the sound of a woman screeching (to the tune of 33 DMG), and then silence.

electrocution

The cultist, now concerned that he may have harmed his superior, timidly walked towards the smoking door. Carnicula sneaked up on him and stabbed him with a dagger, while everyone else then attempted to attack him too with varied success. Enraged, the man nearly instant-killed Carnicula, taking him down to -12HP (if you go more than your max HP below zero you die instantly, without the chance to stabilise with saving rolls when unconscious) and pinned him to the wall. Ravoprax then finished the man off with a thornwhip. In the next room we found Frulum Mondath dead, saving us the trouble, but anything of value had been fried when she burned up in the attack. In her chambers we found diaries and a map of the area, indicating the towns already attacked and ransacked, and an arrow pointing to the town of Beregost – potentially the next target.

half-dragon

At the end of room was a rope descending into the darkness beneath. Ravoprax led the way down, with everyone following with various degrees of success when trying to stay quiet. There, praying to a large statue of a five-headed dragon, we found Langdedrosa, the blue half dragon who led the attack on Greenest and delivered a beating to Red in one-on-one combat for the lives of some hostages. Eldo, for some reason, cast a fog over the back of the room. As he had already heard us approach, we walked out of the fog and faced him. After taunting Red for her defeat, and Ravoprax for the slaughter of his people, the party attacked Langdedrosa. Ravoprax enveloped him in a moonbeam, a column of light that delivered damage as long as he stayed in it, but it would also damage any of us entering the area, making melee attacking almost impossible.

Almost.

Ignoring this, Artin ran in to attack, receiving damage herself from Ravoprax’s spell and then missing the attack badly, knocking one of the heads of the statue. Suddenly acid spat out of several holes in the wall, damaging Langdedrosa and instantly knocking out Carnicula again. Staying out of the moonbeam, Red threw her handaxes at the half dragon, dealing moderate but frustratingly low damage considering how much she wanted his head. Enraged at the acid burning his skin, Langdedrosa hit a multi attack on Artin and knocked her out too. But in doing this, the DM forgot to move him… so at the end of his turn he took a huge amount of extra damage from the moonbeam, and collapsed to the ground.

The spell ended, Red walked up to his body and cut off the head, as Ravoprax prised off a tooth for his necklace. We stabilised and woke our unconscious comrades, and opened a chest under the statue. A click indicated a trap, but as Artin had already set that off during the fight by accident, nothing else happened. Inside was a good haul of various gems and jewellery, so we pocketed all of it to sell later.

Continuing into the cavern, we found a room with three large black dragon eggs. For reasons that I probably won’t ever understand, Carnicula and Eldo decided to sacrifice one to Talos under the Tiamat statue. Cracking the egg open, Carnicula bit into the infant dragon in it’s death throes, again taking acid damage before it died. As Ravoprax thought that the best course of action was to finish destroying the eggs, because more black dragons would be a bad thing, we elected to crack them open. So, through a decidedly less insane method than the other egg, Red and Ravoprax broke open the remaining two and put the writhing baby dragons out of their misery. Dark.

We moved on, finding another room largely empty with a few rats scurrying around. Using ‘Speak to Animals’, Red asked one of them about what was left in the cave. After finding out that we had disposed of all of the dragon eggs and most of the cultists in the area, and hearing the words ‘ambush drake nursery’ describe one of the remaining caves, we decided that we were done here. It was late, we had been battered from all of our fights, so we headed outside.

A single kobold stared at us from the watchtower outside the cave. Red held up the head of Langdedrosa, and the kobold threw himself out of the tower, killing himself instantly. A pretty extreme reaction, as this was one of the rare times when Red wasn’t actually planning on killing. The party decided to head through Greenest to rest, before heading on to the town of Elturel to meet up with Leosin.

We decided to start recording these D&D sessions as a test to see how it would sounds as a podcast, and we ended up liking it a lot and kept it up in the form of ‘Total Reroll’. As such this is the last installment of D&D Tales, mainly because it is too much hassle writing up and editing the sessions for a podcast at the same time (it’s also much funnier). Check out the first episode here!

D&D Tales – Not Playing Around Any More

Adam continues his descent into roleplaying games in a new D&D campaign

Following on from the first session where we rolled for stats and had an all out brawl against each other to get a handle on our new characters, we had the real start of the Hoard of the Dragon Queen campaign. Present for the evening was Ravoprax the dragonborn druid, Daria Do’Urden the half-drow monk, Nausicaä the half-genasi (genie) bard, and my character Red, the human barbarian. All of our characters had been troubled by dreams that compelled them to head to the town of Greenest. We all approached the Green Fields area, south east of Baldur’s Gate, at the same time. As we reached the top of the hill, we saw the town burning, with an adult Blue Dragon hovering above and attacking.

We entered the town from the south, and were met by a fleeing family protected by a woman with a shield. Running after them were 8 kobolds; reptilian humanoids that worship dragons. Outnumbered and without any real planning, we ran straight in. The group made short work of two kobolds, but the largest took to the sky just out of reach. After Ravoprax, clearly terrifying the villagers with his appearance, took out another two with a lightning breath, the flying beast knocked him out by dropping a rock on his head.

Dropping a rock.
On his head.

Their numbers and our low level was proving more perilous than we had expected. Using the ‘Rage’ ability (as in life, my favourite response to any situation), Red took out two more, Nausicaä “sassily” shot one and Daria broke another’s neck by punching it so hard.

Kobold

In the whole of our previous campaign, our first KO didn’t come until the final fight. This time we had one in our first, and more to come during the evening. The DM wasn’t playing around any more. We grabbed and questioned the last kobold. They were commanded by the half-dragon Langdedrosa, who had ordered them to gather treasure. The cultists were planning on raising Tiamat, the Dragon Queen. Apparently they were doing this non-violently, but as that was clearly total bullshit we killed the remaining kobold. The thankful villagers asked who we were, in case they needed to call on us again. The DM had been bothering us for a potential name for our adventuring company for a while…

“We’re the Feministas!” (cue theme music, which we decided was the start of Whiplash, and Charlie’s Angels style posing)

With more cultists on the way, we all ran to the keep to talk to the Governor. He told us the cultists were raiding the tax wagon, and begged us to go through the sewers to save people trapped in the temple. Then we could secure a path of evacuation for everyone to the nearby forest.

Normal rats. Not even ones that are either geniuses or insane. As soon as we entered the sewers, Daria was swarmed by rats and knocked out as they gnawed at her. Normal rats. This party was not the hardy adventuring bunch we were used to being. We pushed them back with torches, healed her and threw rations to them. Sneaking out the other side, we spied a cultist in the bushes. Ravoprax entangled him, and Nausicaä put another to sleep. Nearby, kobolds were about to burn the temple, so Red eviscerated one and Nausicaä performed a Kirby style sword flip from Smash Bros. to kill the other.

kirby

The people in the temple refused to leave, not trusting the dragonborn Ravoprax as cultists and a dragon were currently attacking their town, so Red told them to run for the hills. Meanwhile the sleeping cultist drowned, as we left him face down in the river. We revived him, as he looked more important than the concious one, passing this act off as some form of lazy water-boarding. We dumped the first cultist into the sewer as rat bait, then headed back to the keep to question our captive.

At this point Amber Braunanvil, the mountain dwarf ranger, joined us for the rest of the evening, sitting down and simply stating that the room “smells like nerds”. Accurate. We questioned the cultist and learned of a camp to the south east, ‘Skyreach’, and that they have nearly gathered enough gold to raise Tiamat, after raiding several towns. We chucked him to the rats too, and looked out at the square.

There was around 50 kobolds, far too many for us to fight, along with 12 cultists and the half-dragon leader. They surrounded a gallows with an old man and several children lined up to it. On the ramparts of the keep we were given siege crossbows to fire at the circling dragon. Instead, we tried to save the civilians. Amber fired a bow and rolled a natural 20, cutting all of the ropes of the nooses, but cultists grab the prisoners and put knives to their throats. While we dithered and decided what to do, the dragon killed two guards. More time wasting, and he suddenly struck and dealt huge damage to the whole party, knocking out those with lower HP (all forgetting, again, that we are still level 1) before flying off.

blue

Langdedrosa then issued a challenge, saying that if one of us fights him one on one, with no interference from either side, then he’ll let the hostages go. If we don’t meet his challenge, he’ll kill them and walk away with the gold anyway. As the character with the most health, and possibly most set for melee combat, Red decided to go. She walked out into the square to face the imposing half-dragon.

I was fairly worried at this point, as the DM had made it clear that things would be more unforgiving. I was expecting a Viper Vs. Mountain sort of deal, ending with my character being wiped out and flat out killed at level 1. The fight went as well as it could have done, with Red rushing in with rage straight away. Nausicaä taunted him from the ramparts (fairly tamely), somehow causing minimal damage. However, the half-dragon, clearly much more powerful than the barbarian, smashed her with a double attack, bringing her to her knees. With a sword at her throat, he gloated that he was a man of his word, sparing her life as she stared down at the dirt.

As he and his cultists left, their treasure claimed, Red swore blood vengeance against the half-dragon who defeated her so easily. The hostages were free and the town was safe, but the group could do nothing to stop the dragon cult from furthering their plans.

The five of us all levelled up, but this session taught us that our first campaign really was a beginner’s adventure. Characters were KO’d by falling rocks and swarms of rats. Things were about to get much more dangerous, and if we weren’t more careful we’ll be in serious trouble.
